slow down everyone you're movin too fast, frames can't catch you when you're moving like that.

to the eighteen year old girls who come to byu just to get married--grow up! oh wait, you will. you may not realize right now while you're living in your cushy dorms that your parents are paying for and that get you an automatic more-than-anyone-should-eat-if-they-want-to-be-healthy meal plan, but there is more to being married than a pretty dress.
obviously, i'm not married. and some would say waiting for a missionary is just as crazy. but i've known him for almost two years and dated him for almost half of that time. not nearly as ridiculous, especially when you consider that he really is my best friend--not in the cliche way.
but going from strangers to engaged in under three weeks is just ridiculous. especially when you're 18 and still a baby. there's this thing called money. do you know how to make it? or spend it? there's school. will you finish? or did you honestly come here with no other purpose than to marry the first guy who told you you're beautiful? i want to believe people are smarter than that.
but really--this is what i think is the saddest part. you're missing your life. you moved straight out of your parents' house, and came to school, you've been here for two months. you've met a few people. now you're spending all your time at someone's apartment and then you'll be married. freshman year is FUN. you get to make friends. real friends. friends that you stay up with until 3 am when you have class at 8 because you're sick of homework. friends who you eat breakfast with at 3 pm on saturdays. friends who see you when you're ecstatically happy and friends who see you when you're heartbroken. friends who you live with, and who you have to deal with, because they're always there. friends who were strangers, but end up being family. it's not the same anywhere else, that a group of people all thrown together actually all become great friends (with the occasional frenemy or fighting, but it happens). "social" apartment complexes will never match the sociality of dorms. these are the people who helped you deal with being away from home for the first time, and the people who you helped in return.
maybe sometimes you feel like this culture doesn't allow a girl to turn 20 and be unmarried. guess what kid? you're wrong. it's perfectly okay. you can even (i know this is heretical, so be prepared) graduate from college while still unmarried. you don't have to marry somebody just because you're worried nobody else will ask you.

people seriously concern me.

yes, marriage is important. that means you shouldn't just do it. this is not a nike commercial.

Nice tirade, Eliza. You're right about all the dorm friends. There really isn't anything like them. The most important thing to remember is that marriage isn't a short-term commitment. It's an eternal commitment, and eternity is a long, long time. If people don't take it seriously, they may be in for a rude awakening. And we can't forget helping our beautiful daughters grow up!
